Huayhuash Circuit - Final Thoughts

HIKING

As much as I enjoyed parts of the hike, mentally I was not in a good place for a lot of it due to being worried about Tim's health. He’s the kind of person to not think anything bad could happen, so I was definitely more concerned than he was!

If I was to go back and do it again, I would love to do the full Alpine Route, as I think this has the best views. Although, given the toughness at such high altitude, I would do it as a tour or hire a horse to carry my gear – no matter how fit I get from hiking, I know my limits and I would definitely still struggle with the weight of my pack in the altitude.

I was definitely surprised how popular it was, but most groups seemed to be doing the Alpine Route because after Day 3, we saw only a handful of other hikers from Day 4 - 7. All of the official campsites had bathroom facilities which I wasn't expecting - and most of them seemed to be in pretty decent condition, minus Gashapampa which was a very dirty hole in the ground (nature is much nicer!).

It wasn't the easiest to plan, and AllTrails was confusing at times, but in all honesty the trail was pretty easy to follow and we didn't have any difficulty. I wish I hadn't spent so much time stressing beforehand!
